Breaking News: Sheffield Wednesday young star seals January move after ‘agreement’ with Owls
Former Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Devis Vasquez, who recently left the club, has finalized his anticipated move. The AC Milan player, acquired on a season-long loan from the European giants during Xisco’s tenure as Owls boss, aimed to intensify competition in the goalkeeping department alongside Cameron Dawson.
Vasquez, who has been part of the Colombian national squad but has yet to make his debut, featured in 10 matches across various competitions for the Owls. However, under new manager Danny Röhl, he served as a backup and did not see any playing time. His loan with Wednesday was terminated earlier this week.
Milan has now confirmed the speculations by announcing that the 25-year-old will join Serie B strugglers Ascoli for the remainder of the season. The statement also clarified that, contrary to some reports, there was no outright break clause in the loan agreement between the two clubs, and an arrangement was mutually negotiated. The rumored deal involving James Beadle from Brighton & Hove Albion was reportedly influenced by Milan’s confidence in securing another club for Vasquez.
Milan’s official statement read: “AC Milan can confirm that an agreement has been reached with Sheffield Wednesday FC to end Devis Vásquez’s loan early. The player will now join Ascoli Calcio 1898 FC on loan until 30 June 2024. The Club would like to wish Devis all the best for the remainder of the season.”
With Beadle and Dawson now contending for goalkeeping duties, young Pierce Charles is in a backup role. Dawson was chosen for Saturday’s defeat at Southampton, but Röhl emphasized that the goalkeeper position is open for competition, with selection based on training performance and other factors.
