Chicago Bears made a significant move on Tuesday by appointing Shane Waldron as their new offensive coordinator, with high expectations that his experience as the former offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks will maximize the potential of quarterback Justin Fields or any potential new quarterback, particularly if they opt for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Waldron, who spent the last three seasons as the offensive coordinator under Pete Carroll in Seattle, steps into the role previously held by Luke Getsy, who was dismissed after two years. During his time with the Seahawks, Waldron orchestrated the offense led by Russell Wilson in 2021 and played a key role in Geno Smith’s remarkable transformation from a journeyman to the AP Comeback Player of the Year in 2022.

Despite the Seahawks’ offense ranking 21st in total offense, 14th in passing, and 17th in scoring during the past season, Waldron’s impact was evident in the development of Smith and the overall performance of the team.

Before joining the Seahawks, Waldron spent four years as an assistant with the Los Angeles Rams, where he served as the passing game coordinator during Jared Goff’s tenure as the quarterback. The coaching changes for the Seahawks followed Pete Carroll’s transition to an advisory role two weeks ago, concluding a 14-year run that included a Super Bowl championship.

The Chicago Bears, who finished the previous season with a 7-10 record and a notable defensive improvement, face crucial decisions, including whether to retain Justin Fields or potentially draft quarterbacks like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye with the No. 1 pick. Coach Matt Eberflus, with a 10-24 record through two seasons, is also under scrutiny for his long-term security.

Despite the Bears’ success in rushing, ranking second in the league after leading in 2022, their passing game has been a consistent challenge over the past two seasons. Justin Fields, known for his explosive plays with both his arm and legs, has struggled with consistency as a passer throughout his three seasons. The Bears have the option to stick with Fields and trade the No. 1 pick, similar to last year’s deal with Carolina, or select a potential franchise-changing quarterback in the upcoming draft.

Chicago is also in search of a defensive coordinator, with Eberflus taking over play-calling duties after Alan Williams resigned in September. The team faces critical decisions regarding Fields’ future, the upcoming draft, and coaching staff appointments, adding layers of complexity to their offseason plans.
