JUST IN: Packers Star laments playoff mistake and isn’t ‘nervous’ with uncertain future
GREEN BAY — Darnell Savage wasn’t preoccupied with his long-term prospects this week; he was still dwelling on a missed opportunity from a few days earlier. The veteran safety for the Green Bay Packers, soon to be a free agent, expressed his disappointment over a dropped interception during the team’s 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC divisional playoff round.
As Savage cleared out his locker alongside his teammates, he reflected on what he deemed a “rookie mistake.” This error occurred early in the game, on the 49ers’ initial possession, as Savage attempted to intercept a pass intended for Brandon Aiyuk. He acknowledged his error, admitting that he was already envisioning a touchdown before securing the ball.
The incident mirrored a similar scenario just six days earlier when Savage intercepted a pass from Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott, scoring a 64-yard touchdown. However, this time, his premature anticipation cost him the opportunity.
Even if Savage had successfully made the interception and scored a second pick-6 in less than a week, it wouldn’t guarantee the Packers a spot in the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions. Nevertheless, it would have been a welcomed extension to what could be his final season with the Packers.
Savage, the Packers’ second first-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, played the 2023 season under a one-year, fully guaranteed $7.9 million fifth-year option. Despite dealing with injuries, he played a significant role in the playoffs, with his performance against the Cowboys possibly serving as a fitting conclusion to his time with the team.
Reflecting on his 79-game stint with the Packers, Savage’s evaluation isn’t straightforward. He began as an instant starter in his rookie year, showing promise with six interceptions in his first two seasons. However, under defensive coordinator Joe Barry, his fit seemed uncertain, and his interception numbers declined while missed tackles increased.
Despite a challenging 2023 season, Savage’s return to the lineup coincided with improved communication in the defense. Head coach Matt LaFleur highlighted Savage’s strength in communication and acknowledged his role in the team’s defensive improvement.
Savage’s future with the Packers might be influenced by LaFleur’s decision regarding defensive coordinator Joe Barry. If Barry is retained, Savage may consider other options, whereas a change in coordinators could offer a new vision for Savage’s usage.
Expressing some frustration, Savage emphasized his belief in continuous growth, acknowledging that everyone’s journey is different. Whether he stays with the Packers or moves elsewhere, he remains confident and appreciative of his time in Green Bay, recognizing the team’s emblematic “G” for greatness.
