Buccaneers make another smart hire by adding ‘well-regarded’ Georgia coach

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have several priorities to address this offseason, with Liam Coen’s efforts to finalize his offensive staff quietly gaining attention.

Coen’s work has been praised as exceptional, with recent additions to his staff, like Brian Piccuci, garnering notice. Piccuci’s recruitment from Lexington signals a concerted effort to revamp the offensive line, a significant challenge given the team’s two years of subpar performance and the likelihood of significant roster turnover in that area.

Bringing in Picucci is part of the strategy to bolster the Buccaneers’ run game, which struggled despite the presence of explosive players like Rachaad White. Improving the run game is crucial for opening up opportunities for receivers like Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, a consideration that Coen is evidently mindful of as he continues to shape his coaching staff.

Buccaneers make another smart hire by adding ‘well-regarded’ Georgia coach

After recruiting one of his former colleagues from Kentucky, Liam Coen delved back into the college ranks to bring Bryan McClendon, the wide receivers coach for the Georgia Bulldogs, into the same role with the Buccaneers. While McClendon may not be a household name for casual Saturday football viewers, the feedback surrounding his hiring indicates another astute move by Coen. Described as “well-regarded” and highly valued within Kirby Smart’s coaching staff at Georgia, McClendon replaces Brad Idzik, who departed to serve as the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator under Dave Canales.

McClendon’s coaching journey, including stops at South Carolina and Oregon, alongside his alma mater Georgia, culminated in a national championship victory in 2022. Despite initially being set to join Miami as co-offensive coordinator, McClendon’s return to Georgia underscores his commitment and potential. His diverse experience suggests he brings not only expertise but also the promise of emerging as a prominent figure in NFL coaching circles.

In his new role, McClendon will play a pivotal part in evolving the Buccaneers’ passing game, working closely with talents like Chris Godwin and presumably Mike Evans, while also nurturing the development of Trey Palmer as a future WR3. Although Coen is still acclimating to his position as Buccaneers offensive coordinator, his track record thus far indicates that he is poised to fulfill the team’s expectations admirably.
