Breaking News: 27-Years Old Sends 10-Word Message To Saskatchewan Roughriders Fans
Jalon Edwards-Cooper expresses evident enthusiasm when discussing the eventful and joyful recent weeks he has experienced.
He remarks, “With the birth of my newborn, everything feels fresh as we step into 2024,” shares the 27-year-old defensive back. “Starting a new, I believe Saskatchewan offers a promising environment for this journey.”
This sentiment led him to join the Roughriders on Feb. 13, marking the commencement of the CFL’s free-agency period.
“It presents a fantastic opportunity for me, a chance to embark on something new,” reflects Edwards-Cooper from his residence in Houston. “Having spent the past three years in B.C., I view Saskatchewan as a fresh start.”
Another significant beginning for Edwards-Cooper is the recent arrival of his first child, Aspyn, with his wife, Ashley, just six weeks ago.
“Becoming a father is an incredible experience, despite the sleepless nights,” he proudly admits with a chuckle. “It’s challenging right now with the lack of sleep, but overall, I’m relishing the journey.”
He adds, “They’ll be accompanying me to Saskatchewan, and I believe having them by my side will provide me with tremendous motivation.”
While defensive backs typically aim to prevent separation on the field, Edwards-Cooper now applies the same principle to his geographical move.
“My actions not only benefit me but also my family,” he asserts. “Having a daughter has shifted my perspective significantly. It’s a whole new outlook on life.”
He reflects, “Previously, I spent my off-season running around with friends, but my daughter has grounded me. I’ve been there for her every step of the way; I can’t bear to leave her.”
Now aligned with Rider Nation, Edwards-Cooper feels supported by the enthusiastic fan base, which played a pivotal role in his decision to join Saskatchewan, alongside new arrivals Head Coach Corey Mace and Pass Game Coordinator/Defensive Backs Coach Joshua Bell.
He states, “Under Coach Mace, it’s a fresh start. Both Coach Mace and Coach Bell are fantastic individuals, and I believe they’ve assembled a strong team here in Sask.”
He expresses his eagerness to be part of Riderville, inspired by his previous experiences playing there with B.C.
Feeling the energy from the fans as he walked into the stadium left a lasting impression on Edwards-Cooper.
“You can’t help but feel it; it’s palpable,” he says. “I look forward to having the fans cheering me on instead of booing.”
Edwards-Cooper’s journey through football and basketball has been remarkable. Although basketball was a natural fit, he was introduced to football at a young age by his uncles, eventually realizing his potential in high school.
Transitioning from Dekaney High School to Texas A&M University-Commerce marked the beginning of his collegiate and professional football career, where he showcased his talent early on.
With impressive stats in both college and the CFL, Edwards-Cooper caught the attention of the Roughriders’ management, leading to his signing with the team.
Reflecting on what he brings to the field, Edwards-Cooper emphasizes his passion for the game and his dedication to being a team player, promising to deliver energy and commitment wherever he plays.
