Matt Chapman is departing his position at third base for the Toronto Blue Jays to pursue new opportunities with the San Francisco Giants.

Reportedly, Chapman has agreed to a lucrative three-year contract worth $54 million with the Giants, as disclosed by Jon Heyman of MLB Network. As per Heyman’s information, Chapman’s compensation is structured as follows: $20 million in 2024, $18 million in 2025, and $16 million in 2026 unless the contract options are declined.

The 30-year-old Chapman, renowned for his defensive prowess, clinched the Gold Glove award in 2023, a year in which the Blue Jays reached the wild-card playoff round for the second consecutive time.

During the previous season, Chapman’s performance included 17 home runs, 39 doubles, 66 runs, and 54 RBIs across 140 games. Despite earning the American League’s Player of the Month title in April, his productivity tapered off thereafter.

Since Chapman turned down the qualifying offer from the Blue Jays, Toronto stands to gain a draft pick following the fourth round of the 2024 MLB draft.

Chapman originally joined the Blue Jays through a trade with the Oakland Athletics in March 2022.

Notably, Chapman shares a history with the Giants’ new manager, Bob Melvin, having played under him during Melvin’s tenure with the Athletics spanning five years.
