Reasons B.C. Lions hoping to make 2024 Grey Cup a ‘zip’ regardless of team qualification
The B.C. Lions are adopting a “Grey Cup or nothing” mentality for the 2024 season, emphasizing their commitment to hosting the CFL championship game regardless of their on-field success.
According to Duane Vienneau, the team’s president, their business plan doesn’t hinge on their participation in the game. Instead, they aim to separate the Grey Cup from the team’s performance and focus on organizing a remarkable event.
The plans for the 2024 Grey Cup festival include over 50 activities and activations spanning from November 11 to November 17, supported by $3.5 million in provincial funding and corporate sponsorships.
The festival’s centerpiece will feature zip lines, a concept Vienneau championed after witnessing their popularity during the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Vienneau envisions the 2024 Grey Cup as the pinnacle of CFL events, drawing from successful strategies implemented in previous host cities. B.C. Lions owner Amar Doman prioritized securing the Grey Cup bid upon acquiring the team, highlighting its significance to the franchise and the city.
Despite the potentially rainy coastal climate, organizers are prepared to ensure the festival’s success, showcasing their commitment to hosting a memorable event regardless of weather conditions.
The Lions’ season opener against the Toronto Argonauts on June 9, 2024, marks the beginning of their journey to exceed expectations both on and off the field.
