BREAKING NEWS: Clippers’ Key Star Ruled Out With Surgery On Left Hand
Russell Westbrook, a prominent sixth man for the LA Clippers, underwent surgery on his fractured left hand on Monday, with sources indicating optimism for his return before the Western Conference playoffs begin in April, according to ESPN.
The Clippers have categorized Westbrook’s status as week-to-week following the injury sustained during a Friday night game against the Washington Wizards. Westbrook will now focus on rehabilitation to rejoin the Clippers, who have positioned themselves as strong contenders for the championship this season.
Notably, Westbrook had returned in under four weeks after fracturing his right hand in 2014 while playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder, missing only 14 games.
Should Westbrook make a comeback in April, the Clippers face a tight schedule, with eight games in 14 days, including two back-to-back matchups, before the postseason commences.
In Westbrook’s absence, the Clippers will need to compensate for his energy and aggression. Following his exit during the first half of Friday’s game, reserve guard Bones Hyland has seen increased playing time, notably logging significant minutes in recent games against the Washington Wizards, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Milwaukee Bucks.
Initially starting as the point guard for the season, Westbrook transitioned to the bench after the Clippers acquired James Harden in a late October trade. This move aimed to enhance synergy among the team’s four star players on the court, resulting in a 35-13 record for the Clippers following Westbrook’s switch to the bench.
Throughout the season, Westbrook has maintained averages of 11.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists for the Clippers.
Following their loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday, the Clippers’ record stands at 39-21, positioning them in fourth place within the conference.
