The Detroit Tigers have traded infielder Andre Lipcius to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations, as announced by the team on Monday afternoon.

The deal didn’t require any additional moves from Detroit, but Los Angeles had to clear a spot on their 40-man roster to accommodate Lipcius. To do so, they placed left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw on the 60-day injured list, as he continues his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery.

Lipcius was designated for assignment by the Tigers on February 29 when they claimed infielder Buddy Kennedy off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals.

In five Grapefruit League games during Spring Training, Lipcius went 1-for-8 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and five strikeouts.

Originally selected by Detroit in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft, Lipcius had an impressive college career at Tennessee, finishing his junior year with a .985 OPS.

Although Lipcius put up decent numbers in the minors, he didn’t quickly rise in the rankings and made his MLB debut only in September 2023. In his 13 games with the Tigers, Lipcius batted .286 with one home run, four RBI, and a .742 OPS, but his defensive performance at third base resulted in a negative four defensive runs saved, bringing his WAR down to -0.3.

Lipcius has a career batting average of .248 with 18 home runs, 85 RBI, and a .752 OPS in 182 Double-A games. In 144 Triple-A appearances, Lipcius boasts a .281 average with 14 home runs, 82 RBI, and an .800 OPS.

The 25-year-old Lipcius played across first, second, and third base in 2023, with a few starts in left field.

Considering the Dodgers’ packed major league roster, Lipcius is expected to begin the 2024 season in Triple-A, despite his versatility in multiple positions.
