Premier League club release statement as Newcastle United eye Dan Ashworth replacement
AFC Bournemouth has announced that their technical director, Richard Hughes, will be departing from the club at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season. This development coincides with Newcastle United’s pursuit of a new sporting director, as Dan Ashworth is currently on gardening leave following interest from Manchester United. Hughes shares a connection with Newcastle through his association with Eddie Howe and several former Bournemouth staff members now at Newcastle.
Hughes, who was once teammates with Howe and assistant manager Jason Tindall at Bournemouth, later returned to Dean Court under their management. Serving as the Cherries’ technical director since 2016, Hughes has been an integral part of the club’s leadership during Howe’s tenure as manager.
In a statement released by Bournemouth confirming Hughes’ departure, the former Scotland international expressed gratitude for his time at the club. Hughes highlighted the joy and pride he experienced representing the club, both as a player and in his leadership role. He acknowledged the challenging yet rewarding journey the club has undertaken, crediting the ambitious ownership of Bill Foley and the dedication of CEO Neill Blake. Hughes also praised the coaching staff, players, and supporters, expressing confidence in the club’s bright future.
While the reasons for Hughes’ departure remain undisclosed, speculation suggests he may be considering opportunities at Newcastle or Serie A club AS Roma.
Despite Hughes’ close association with Howe, the decision regarding the appointment of a new sporting director at Newcastle will be made independently by the club. Howe emphasized the importance of considering various perspectives in the selection process, aiming for a candidate who aligns with the long-term vision for the football club.
