BREAKING NEWS: Cincinnati Reds Announced The Departure Of Another Star Player
After an illustrious 17-year tenure with the Cincinnati Reds, first baseman Joey Votto is making a homecoming of sorts by returning to Canada to join his hometown Toronto Blue Jays on a minor league contract.
I am excited about the opportunity to work my way back to the Major Leagues. It’s even sweeter to attempt this while wearing the uniform of my hometown team, the Toronto Blue Jays. https://t.co/s7xEFLKe8V

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Toronto Blue Jays have inked a minor league deal with first baseman Joey Votto, extending him a non-roster invite to Spring Training.
This marks a significant transition for Votto, as it’s the first time he’s been part of an organization other than the Cincinnati Reds, who drafted him in the second round of the 2002 MLB Draft. Throughout his career, Votto has etched his name in the Reds’ record books with a remarkable 17-season run.
The 40-year-old slugger recently gained attention for his humorous plea for a contract from any MLB team following the Reds’ decision to decline his $20 million club option last fall. Despite this, Votto’s ties to Toronto run deep, having been born and raised there. Additionally, he has represented Canada in the World Baseball Classic, setting the stage for a heartfelt homecoming if he secures a spot on the Blue Jays’ Opening Day roster.
Since his major league debut in 2007 through the 2023 season, Votto has amassed an impressive array of statistics, including 2,135 hits, 356 home runs, 1,144 RBI, and a 64.4 WAR. Known for his six All-Star appearances and former NL MVP title, Votto boasts a career batting average of .294.
Although Votto faced a less-than-stellar season in 2023, hitting .202 with 14 home runs, 38 RBI, and a -0.1 WAR in 65 games, his previous decade-long, $225 million contract with the Reds suggests he’s not necessarily seeking a hefty payday in 2024. However, it remains uncertain whether he’s willing to commit to a stint in the minor leagues or if his upcoming weeks in Spring Training will determine his future in baseball.
Furthermore, Votto’s potential role in Toronto’s lineup adds intrigue, considering the Blue Jays already have three-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base and recently signed Justin Turner as their designated hitter. Turner, a right-handed hitter, contrasts with Votto’s left-handed stance, potentially enhancing Votto’s value to the team.
