Breaking News: Astros GM discusses possibly adding to bullpen
Astros General Manager Dana Brown recently appeared on MLB Network Radio to provide insight into the team’s preparations for the upcoming Opening Day. Brown indicated that the lineup and starting rotation are mostly settled, with his main focus now on solidifying the bullpen.
While expressing confidence in relievers Josh Hader, Ryan Pressly, Bryan Abreu, and Rafael Montero, Brown acknowledged the need to address the middle innings following the departures of Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton, and Hector Neris during the offseason. The team is exploring both internal and external options to enhance its bullpen mix, with trade discussions ongoing.
With four relievers seemingly locked into roster spots, four positions remain up for grabs in the bullpen. Right-hander Brandon Bielak, who performed well last season, is likely to secure one of those spots, likely in a long relief role. Other contenders include right-hander Dylan Coleman and left-hander Bennett Sousa, both of whom received praise from Brown earlier in camp.
Several other pitchers on the 40-man roster, such as Ronel Blanco, Seth Martinez, Oliver Ortega, and Parker Mushinski, offer potential bullpen options. Non-roster invitees Wander Suero and Joel Kuhnel are also in consideration.
Former top prospect Forrest Whitley, who has battled injuries and ineffectiveness, presents an intriguing but uncertain option. However, Whitley’s recent finger inflammation may impact his availability for Opening Day.
Despite the array of options, the Astros seek more certainty in their middle relief. Brown may explore trade opportunities, although suitable candidates are scarce at this stage of the offseason. While players like Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin have been mentioned in trade rumors, their injuries and high salaries may not align with the Astros’ needs.
Nevertheless, as Opening Day approaches, unforeseen trade opportunities may arise as teams evaluate their bullpen depth. Brown remains vigilant for potential acquisitions, whether through trade or other means, to bolster the bullpen for the upcoming season.
