BREAKING: San Francisco Giants Dealing with Injuries to Marquee Signing
With less than a fortnight remaining until Opening Day, the San Francisco Giants are contending with a string of injuries, notably to their prominent offseason acquisition. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Jung Hoo Lee is sidelined due to hamstring tightness and is expected to be out for the next few days.
Lee, who joined the team on a six-year deal this offseason following a successful career in Korea, was anticipated to bolster the team’s offensive prowess, an area of weakness last season. Alongside Lee, the Giants have also brought in Jorge Soler and Matt Chapman during the offseason.
In addition to Lee’s setback, the team is grappling with a more severe injury to left-handed reliever Ethan Small. As reported by Slusser, Small is sidelined with an oblique strain and is expected to be out for several weeks. Consequently, Juan Sanchez and Amir Garrett are now competing for the second lefty relief role in camp.
Small, aged 27, debuted in the major leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2022 but has only made four appearances in the past two years, boasting a career ERA of 8.71 in those outings. He made 38 relief appearances in the minors last season and was aiming for the second lefty role in the bullpen behind Taylor Rogers.
Despite finishing fourth in the National League West last season, the Giants are striving for a rebuild this season, bolstered by their recent acquisitions and the hiring of veteran manager Bob Melvin, formerly with the San Diego Padres. They are also pinning their hopes on Jordan Hicks to fortify their roster.
