BREAKING NEWS: Oakland Athletics Adds Another Key Player This Offseason
The 2024 Oakland Athletics are set to resemble the 2023 San Francisco Giants quite closely. As per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, corner infielder J.D. Davis has signed a one-year contract with Oakland. This marks the fourth player from the 2023 Giants squad to make the move to their local rivals this offseason.
Former SF Giants corner infielder becomes 4th player from 2023 team to join the A’s this offseason
According to Rosenthal, Davis is set to earn $2.5 million in 2024, with the potential to make an extra $1 million through incentives. Despite the Giants releasing him recently, they are still responsible for $1.1 million. Davis will find some familiarity in Oakland, where Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, and Scott Alexander, all of whom played for San Francisco in 2023, have also joined.
Originally slated to earn $6.9 million in 2024 after winning his arbitration case, Davis lost his contract guarantee when opting for arbitration, leading to his release before Opening Day and saving the Giants approximately $5.8 million.
Although disappointing, Davis garnered interest from at least seven teams, including the New York Mets, before swiftly signing with a team promising significant playing time in 2024.
As a 30-year-old infielder with experience at first base, third base, and designated hitter, Davis is expected to make the most impact at third base for Oakland. The A’s struggled at third base in 2023, ranking poorly in offensive and defensive metrics.
Davis is coming off a productive year, showcasing improvements in both his batting and defensive skills. Although his defensive metrics received mixed reviews, his Outs Above Average (OAA) suggests better defensive capabilities.
Joining Oakland presents both opportunities and uncertainties, especially concerning potential relocation efforts, with a temporary move to the Sacramento River Cats’ home field being a possibility.
With free agency looming in a year, Davis faces a crucial season to solidify his position for next year’s market. Despite the challenges faced by free agents this season, Davis, with his seven years of experience, has the chance to boost his value with a strong performance in 2024.
