Initially, Barkley, who was a beloved figure among Giants fans, had expressed his desire to remain with the team for the entirety of his NFL career. However, his unexpected move to their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, on a three-year, $37.75 million contract came as a shock to many.

Following his announcement of the move on social media, which included two Eagles emojis, Barkley faced criticism from Barber, a franchise legend, who remarked, “You’re dead to me.” This response from Barber, who spent his entire NFL career with the Giants, despite his own controversial exit in 2007, drew attention.

In response, Barkley initially engaged with Barber on social media, but later deleted his post. Now settled in his new role, Barkley expressed appreciation towards the Giants, stating during his first press conference as an Eagle, “To the Giants fans that were hurt by me leaving, I have nothing but respect for all those guys.” He admitted that his handling of the situation on social media could have been better and expressed gratitude to the Giants fans, while acknowledging the business aspect of the NFL.

Despite the rivalry between the Eagles and the Giants, New York did not present Barkley with a contract offer to stay. Previously, they had placed a franchise tag on him, resulting in a $10.1 million deal, though Barkley desired a longer contract. The Giants opted to prioritize Daniel Jones over Barkley, granting the quarterback a substantial four-year, $160 million contract. Had they tagged Barkley again, he would have received $11.95 million, but they chose not to do so or offer him an extension.

Selected as the second overall pick in the 2018 draft, Barkley quickly proved his talent by winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, accumulating impressive stats including 1,307 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns.

Injuries have plagued Barkley over the past four years, though he managed to score 10 touchdowns in the previous season despite missing some games due to an ankle injury. Seeking security, Barkley found it in the Eagles’ offer. With Barkley now with the Eagles, matchups between them and the Giants are anticipated to be captivating.
