BREAKING NEWS: Rangers’ Key Star suspended four games for bad misconduct
New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe has received a four-game suspension for elbowing New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler in the head. The NHL’s department of player safety issued the suspension following a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, marking the rookie’s first suspension just ten games into his career.
At 21 years old, Rempe had quickly made a name for himself in the league, engaging in four fights since his call-up from the minors. His aggressive style of play, characterized by a couple of borderline hits and frequent fights, resulted in 54 penalty minutes, nearly matching his total ice time of 56:28.
However, his hit on Siegenthaler during Monday night’s game crossed a line, leading to a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. The league’s explanation for the four-game suspension highlighted Rempe’s deliberate extension of his left elbow, posing a significant danger to Siegenthaler rather than merely missing the hit altogether.
As a consequence of the suspension, Rempe will lose $17,083 in salary and will be absent from games against Carolina, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, and the New York Islanders before becoming eligible to return on March 19 against Winnipeg. Siegenthaler sustained an injury from the hit and was unable to continue playing.
