As the 2024 Major League Baseball season gears up for its start, excitement ripples across Los Angeles, particularly with anticipation building around Shohei Ohtani’s debut in Dodger blue. Following his signing with the Dodgers after six seasons with the Angels, fans are eagerly awaiting their first opportunity to witness the Japanese superstar in action.

The buzz surrounding Ohtani’s arrival is intensified by a series of high-profile acquisitions that have bolstered the Dodgers’ roster, solidifying their status as one of the league’s top teams. Enthusiastic fans have flocked to purchase jerseys and memorabilia featuring Ohtani’s name and image, with one devoted supporter going as far as commissioning a mural dedicated to the dynamic player in Little Tokyo.

Renowned artist Robert Vargas has lent his talents to this project, transforming the side of the Miyako Hotel into a breathtaking work of art honoring Ohtani’s multifaceted skills. Vargas describes the mural, spanning 150×60 feet, as “LA Rising,” showcasing Ohtani’s prowess both at the plate and on the mound, complete with an innovative augmented reality element.

“When you scan the QR code and point it up at the mural, he actually will animate and swing on camera and also follow through in his pitch,” Vargas explained. Additionally, fans will be treated to the sounds of the stadium, immersing them in the experience of watching Ohtani play in real life.

Despite facing challenges such as unpredictable weather and the porous nature of the building’s wall, Vargas remains committed to completing the mural in time for the Dodgers’ first home stand of the year. The official unveiling is scheduled for March 27, the day before the team’s home opener, as a celebration of art, culture, and sports.

“It’s a celebration of art and culture and sports,” Vargas remarked. “And I think through all of that, I think we can find that all of us Angelenos have more in common than we think.”
