LATEST: Disappointing Ian Poveda news confirmed after Sheffield Wednesday injury
Ian Poveda, the Sheffield Wednesday attacker, has been withdrawn from the Colombian national team for the upcoming fixtures. Despite being a standout performer for Wednesday since his loan move from Leeds United in the January transfer window, the 24-year-old’s fitness has become a concern after he had to be substituted during the defeat to Ipswich Town over the weekend.
According to Wednesday’s manager, Danny Röhl, both Poveda and captain Barry Bannan are now uncertain for the upcoming game against Swansea City on March 29th. Consequently, Poveda will no longer participate in Colombia’s March camp. The national team has announced his replacement for the matches against Spain and Romania.
The Colombian Football Federation released a statement on their website announcing that Ian Poveda of Sheffield Wednesday and Cristian Borja of SC Braga will be unable to join the national squad for the upcoming matches against Spain and Romania due to physical discomfort, which prevents them from being in optimal condition.
As a result, the Federation and the coaching staff have decided to call up Gustavo Puerta from Bayer Leverkusen and Gabriel Fuentes from Junior FC as replacements. The coach, coaching staff, and players wish Poveda and Borja a swift recovery and hope to see them back with the Colombian National Team soon.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday will be eager for both Poveda and Bannan to recover in time for the resumption of Championship action after the international break, as they are considered crucial components in the team’s push for survival.
