REPORT: Newcastle United legend John Anderson blasts disastrous decision for Sven Botman to play on
Newcastle United will have to navigate the remainder of the season without Sven Botman, with the Dutch defender potentially sidelined until Christmas due to injury.
The decision to allow Botman to continue playing despite his injury has drawn criticism from Newcastle United icon John Anderson. The former Republic of Ireland international believes that this decision has ultimately backfired for the club. Botman’s extended absence was confirmed earlier this week, with the club indicating a recovery timeframe of nine months.
Speaking on BBC Newcastle, Anderson expressed his views on the situation, stating, “They took a risk by allowing him to play through the pain, and it’s a risk that has proven costly for Newcastle.” Anderson noted Botman’s apparent decline in performance and physical condition in recent matches, suggesting that the decision to delay surgery may have exacerbated the situation.
Anderson also expressed surprise at reports suggesting that Botman consulted various specialists before returning to play for Newcastle United. He remarked, “In hindsight, it’s baffling to hear that Botman sought multiple opinions on whether surgery was necessary or if rest would suffice. Unfortunately, it seems that the decision to opt for rest has not yielded the desired results, considering the prolonged absence from the pitch.”
Reflecting on the situation, Anderson emphasized the importance of considering all options carefully in such cases, highlighting the need for informed decision-making to avoid further complications.
