Colts Free Agency: Interesting Defensive Backs the Colts Could Target
The Colts continue to require reinforcement in their defensive backfield. With about $22.4—$23 million still available in their cap space two weeks into the 2024 NFL Free Agency, opportunities remain to address this need. Following the significant trade involving L’Jarius Sneed, there may be upcoming transactions for teams seeking secondary assistance. However, who is left on the market? Here’s a rundown of potential free agent defensive back targets for the Colts.
Justin Simmons | S
Justin Simmons, known as the standout figure in defensive prowess, remains the premier Defensive Back available in Free Agency. With a decade-long career primarily with the Denver Broncos, Simmons, aged 30, has earned accolades such as being a 2nd team All Pro Safety in 4 out of the last 5 seasons. However, following the Broncos’ decision to part ways with Russell Wilson, resulting in the largest dead cap hit in NFL History, Simmons found himself a victim of cap constraints.
Renowned for his proficiency as a Free Safety, Simmons has also showcased his versatility by amassing over 2000 snaps in the box and more than 1000 in the slot. His adaptability stands out as a significant asset. Employing a strategic and intuitive approach, Simmons excels at deciphering quarterbacks’ intentions and swiftly engaging in plays. Since 2019, he leads all Safeties in Passes Defended (51) and Interceptions (23). Combining his adept coverage across various positions and defensive schemes with robust tackling skills in run defense, Simmons presents a multifaceted skill set that garners admiration.
NFL Network’s Nick Shook has singled out the Colts as the ideal destination for Justin Simmons. For a team seeking to augment its defense with a dynamic playmaker, leader, and mentor, Simmons emerges as a compelling choice. Despite entering his 31st year, Simmons maintains his status as one of the NFL’s top 10 Safeties, evident in his stellar performance in 2022, where he secured 6 interceptions in just 12 games. As he embarks on the next phase of his career, there remains a promising trajectory for Simmons, indicating several more years of high-quality football ahead.
Quandre Diggs, S
Diggs presents another potential safety option that might catch the attention of the Colts. He earned Pro Bowl nods from 2020 to 2022 and boasts the eighth highest number of passes defended among safeties, as well as the third highest number of interceptions since 2020. Although there was a decline in Diggs’ performance in 2023, the 31-year-old safety had been remarkably consistent in the preceding four seasons. Mainly operating as a free safety, Diggs effectively monitors the defensive backfield.
Known for his outspoken nature, Diggs doesn’t shy away from holding both teammates and his team accountable, all while providing mentorship to younger players. His knack for making plays and his veteran leadership were particularly beneficial for Seattle’s rookie cornerbacks Devon Witherspoon and Tariq Woolen over the past couple of years.
There are indications of mutual interest between Diggs and the Colts, with recent positive interactions between Diggs and Colts players like Zaire Franklin. Could he emerge as the most probable candidate to join the Colts?
Tashaun Gipson, S
Gipson, at 33, stands as the eldest prospect on this list. However, his age belies his prowess as a versatile safety, particularly excelling in coverage despite his years. While primarily deployed as a free safety, he’s shown flexibility, occasionally shifting into the box or slot. In 2023, among 102 safeties, Gipson impressively ranked 23rd in coverage, showcasing his effectiveness on the field. Given Gus Bradley’s inclination towards a 3-safety rotation, Gipson could find himself in a role akin to his contributions to the formidable 49ers defense over the past couple of seasons, ensuring his freshness throughout.
Entering his 13th NFL season, Gipson brings a wealth of experience and mentorship, which could greatly benefit the youthful Colts secondary. Having played for 6 different teams and under various schemes, he boasts a comprehensive understanding of the NFL landscape.
Although Gipson may not feature prominently in the Colts’ long-term plans, his presence could bolster coverage in the rotation, affording opportunities for emerging talents like Nick Cross, Rodney Thomas II, Daniel Scott, or even a rookie to gain crucial game time. With a seasoned mentor guiding them on the field, these players could take significant strides in their development, potentially cementing their roles as future mainstays in the Colts’ defensive setup. The lasting impact of his mentorship could far surpass his time on the field sporting the horseshoe emblem. Moreover, this move presents a cost-effective solution, allowing the Colts to allocate remaining cap space towards additional signings, further strengthening the team.

The Colts may seek an experienced cornerback in this year’s free agency, and looking towards a rival within their division could be a viable option. Steven Nelson, a former cornerback for the Texans, showcased an impressive performance in the 2023 season, primarily serving as their boundary cornerback 2. Despite temporarily taking over as the top cornerback for six weeks due to Derek Stingley Jr.’s injury, Nelson proved his worth, finishing the season tied for 19th in passes defended with 12, along with securing 4 interceptions. Notably, he only allowed one touchdown in each of the past two seasons.
Nelson’s proficiency lies in his adeptness in man coverage and his above-average skills in zone coverage, making him a valuable addition as a starting cornerback for the Colts. At 31 years old, Nelson has established himself with a solid career trajectory and is valued at approximately $8.4 million per year according to Spotrac. His potential signing with the Colts would offer them a reliable short-term starter while providing opportunities for Julius Brents, Dallis Flowers, and/or Jaylon Jones to develop on the opposite side of the field.
However, the prospect of Nelson reuniting with new Colts backup quarterback Joe Flacco during training camp might stir some awkwardness, especially considering their past encounter in the 2023 Wildcard Round.
Ahkello Witherspoon, CB
If the Colts are in search of an experienced cornerback who possesses size, athleticism, and demonstrated strong performance in 2023, they should consider targeting Ahkello Witherspoon. Despite facing a significant number of targets last year, Witherspoon excelled, boasting one of the lowest completion percentages among all cornerbacks. Standing at 6’3 and weighing 200lbs, with impressive physical attributes including a 9.89 Relative Athletic Score and 33-inch arms, he fits the mold of a cornerback favored by Chris Ballard and Gus Bradley.
At 29 years old, Witherspoon bounced back impressively in the 2023 season after showing glimpses of potential during his tenure with the 49ers and Steelers from 2019 to 2021. Given the opportunity for a starting role within a compatible defensive scheme, the Colts could stand to benefit significantly. While he only signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Rams last season, Witherspoon is likely due for a substantial pay raise. Nonetheless, he may not command the highest price tag among available cornerbacks in free agency.
