INJURY REPORT: Reds infielder undergoes surgery on torn labrum, team hopes for return this season
The recovery timeline for McLain’s shoulder surgery remains undefined, according to Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall.
While the hope is for him to return in 2024, Krall emphasized the uncertainty, stating there’s a wide range of possibilities. McLain, who played multiple positions last season and was expected to be the everyday second baseman in 2024, had a successful surgery to repair a damaged labrum in his left shoulder.
In the absence of McLain, the Reds have faced additional setbacks with outfielder TJ Friedl sidelined due to a fractured wrist and infielder Noelvi Marte suspended for 80 games due to PED use. To address these depth issues, the Reds acquired former All-Star infielder Santiago Espinal in a trade with the Blue Jays.
Espinal, known for his versatility in infield positions, adds depth to the Reds’ roster. Last season, he batted .248 with 14 doubles, two homers, and 25 RBI in 93 games for the Blue Jays. The Reds, who narrowly missed the playoffs last season, aim to start the 2024 season strong as they face the Nationals at home.
