During the international break, one notable figure at Newcastle United has been keeping busy. While many of the club’s players enjoyed a well-deserved break, the recruitment staff remained active and focused on shaping the team’s future.

Newcastle United is currently strategizing for what promises to be a crucial summer transfer window, aiming to bounce back from a challenging season at St James Park. The club is eyeing several potential targets, with a particular emphasis on bolstering attacking options and shoring up Eddie Howe’s defense.

Newcastle United - United appoint Steve Nickson as head of recruitment

Head of recruitment Steve Nickson has been a frequent attendee at games across Europe, including France, Portugal, Spain, and Italy, in recent months. He has also maintained a keen interest in the South American market, with a focus on establishing connections in countries like Brazil and Argentina.

Despite his extensive travels, Nickson was spotted at a game much closer to home: England’s friendly defeat against Brazil, where Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes faced off. Newcastle has previously been linked with Brazilian players Bremer and Raphinha, with ongoing interest from various clubs across Europe and the Saudi Pro League, particularly in the latter.

In addition to his scouting efforts, Nickson also attended Colombia’s victory over Spain at West Ham United’s London Stadium during the international break.

As an integral part of United’s recruitment strategy in recent years, Nickson is expected to assume even more responsibility following Dan Ashworth’s anticipated departure to Manchester United. Alongside these changes, Eddie Howe’s nephew, Andy, has been appointed as the club’s new assistant head of first-team recruitment, indicating a comprehensive approach to bolstering the club’s scouting and recruitment efforts.
