Quinn Thompson, Whitecaps FC’s senior director of player personnel, highlighted Mackenzie’s younger age compared to recent signings. The decision to sign Mackenzie was based on individual readiness rather than age constraints, emphasizing the club’s holistic approach to player development.
Mackenzie has been under the Whitecaps’ umbrella since 2020, joining their Pre-Academy. Balancing soccer and education, he acknowledges the support of his family and the importance placed on academics by the Whitecaps organization.
Thompson has closely monitored Mackenzie’s progress over the past couple of years, emphasizing his growth both on and off the field. Despite challenges, Mackenzie’s ability to adapt and excel has impressed the club.
Mackenzie recognizes the demanding nature of professional soccer, emphasizing the importance of consistent effort and dedication.
As an MLS NEXT Pro player, Mackenzie has the opportunity to be called up to the MLS Whitecaps’ roster up to four times per season, with a limit of two MLS matches per season.
While Mackenzie has already seen playing time with Whitecaps FC2 this season, there’s no fixed timeline for him to become a regular starter. Thompson stresses the importance of Mackenzie’s performance and readiness in determining his role within the team.
Mackenzie’s ultimate goal is to secure a starting position with the FC2 squad, demonstrating his confidence in his abilities and commitment to continuous improvement.
Regarding the specifics of his contract, Mackenzie humorously mentions that it’s not the type to buy his parents a new house, hinting at aspirations for future success.
