BREAKING: Rangers important star appears ahead of schedule in return from back surgery
Max Scherzer has been pleasantly surprised by his recovery progress following back surgery, as he hasn’t encountered the expected nerve pain that often accompanies such procedures. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has felt ahead of schedule since returning home post-surgery, a sentiment shared by Rangers manager Bruce Bochy.
“I really feel like we’re kind of turning the corner here in terms of rehab,” Scherzer remarked after a recent bullpen session. “I’m recovering from things and kind of feeling normal. Looking good.”
Despite initially aiming for a summer return, Scherzer is progressing rapidly, with live batting practice scheduled for next week. In contrast, Jacob deGrom, the Rangers’ other Cy Young winner recovering from Tommy John surgery, is not as far along.
Scherzer’s recovery is particularly remarkable given his age and the nature of his surgery. Bochy expressed amazement at Scherzer’s swift progress, considering the challenges associated with back surgery, especially for someone nearing 40.
Acquired by the Rangers last summer, Scherzer was impactful before his injury sidelined him for part of the postseason. Although his surgery occurred relatively late last year, Scherzer experienced immediate relief and was able to regain strength quickly.
Approaching his recovery with caution, Scherzer emphasizes listening to his body and adhering to a normal progression. Bochy shares Scherzer’s optimism, noting that the veteran pitcher’s readiness has exceeded expectations, suggesting he’ll be back sooner than anticipated.
