BREAKING; Pittsburgh Pirates Star Undergoes Right Knee Surgery With Return Date Unknown
Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Jason Delay recently underwent surgery on his troublesome right knee, as confirmed by Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk. The procedure, termed a “meniscal cleanup,” was performed by Dr. Keith Meister after the Pirates sought a second opinion. Delay, who had been dealing with right knee inflammation, was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 3 and has been limited to just one game this season.
Having spent parts of the last three seasons with the Pirates, Delay enjoyed a career-high 70 games last season. However, his batting performance has been modest, with a cumulative .231/.293/.308 line in 128 games since his debut in 2022, including 17 doubles, two home runs, and 30 RBIs.
Despite his offensive struggles, Delay has earned praise for his defensive skills, particularly his work with the pitching staff. He boasts four defensive runs saved and excels in framing pitches, being notably above average in this aspect. His success in deterring base stealers stands at 15%.
With Delay sidelined, catching duties for the Pirates will be shared between Henry Davis and Joey Bart, the latter being acquired to fill the void left by Delay’s absence. Meanwhile, Yasmani Grandal, currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis, is nearing a return from his stint on the injured list due to plantar fasciitis, providing further depth to the catching position for the Pirates.
