REPORT: San Francisco Giants To Use Top Prospect as Blake Snell’s Injury Replacement
After the San Francisco Giants’ newly acquired top pitcher suffered an injury, they are considering promoting one of their promising young prospects to fill his spot.
With aspirations of returning to the playoffs, the Giants revamped their lineup during the offseason to add more impact players. Despite snagging Blake Snell, the reigning NL Cy Young winner, on a more affordable contract than expected, his late addition to the team meant he needed time to get into game shape, leading to initial struggles.
Unfortunately, Snell’s stint was cut short due to an abductor strain, leaving the Giants scrambling for a replacement starter. Manager Bob Melvin hinted at Mason Black, their seventh overall prospect, as a potential option, noting Black’s consistent performance, especially his strong showings in Triple-A this season.
The 24-year-old has showcased his talent in the minor leagues, boasting an impressive career ERA and a knack for strikeouts. However, Black isn’t currently on the 40-man roster, so the Giants would need to make roster adjustments before activating him.
Nonetheless, if the Giants believe Black can contribute positively, they should give him an opportunity, especially given their current position just below .500 and the need to remain competitive until Snell’s return.
