STEALS, SCOUTING AND SPECTACULAR SNAGS: DRAFT DAYS FOR O’DAY
Drafting someone with exceptional leaping ability like Samuel Emilus was a logical move, especially given his impressive performance in the 2022 CFL Draft where he was chosen by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the first round.
According to Jeremy O’Day, the Roughriders’ Vice-President of Football Operations and General Manager, Emilus was valued for his skill in going up to catch the football, as well as his toughness, running skills, size, and physical presence. These attributes were further highlighted in 2023 when Emilus had a standout season, catching 70 passes for 1,097 yards.
Emilus seized the opportunity to shine in 2023 when he became an opening-day starter due to a teammate’s injury, eventually solidifying his position as a key player in the team. His breakout game came on June 16, where he tied a team record by catching three touchdown passes in a single game. O’Day praised Emilus for his versatility on the field, as well as his positive impact on team morale.
Emilus was one of three receivers selected in the first round of the 2022 Draft, alongside Jalen Philpot and Tyson Philpot. While Jalen Philpot showed promise in his rookie season but was sidelined by injury in his second year, Tyson Philpot made significant contributions, including catching the game-winning touchdown in the Grey Cup.
The Roughriders’ success in drafting players like Emilus, as well as late-round steals like Kian Schaffer-Baker and Jayden Dalke, contributed to the team’s positive performance. Despite challenges such as injuries and canceled combines due to COVID-19, the Roughriders’ scouting department managed to identify talented players like Schaffer-Baker, who exceeded expectations despite limited testing data.
Overall, the Roughriders’ drafting strategy, combined with the players’ determination and talent, has been instrumental in the team’s success, as acknowledged by Emilus himself.
