JUST IN: Colts 2024 draft class will get acclimated this weekend
The Colts’ rookie minicamp kicks off this Friday and wraps up on Sunday. This event marks the beginning of the Indianapolis Colts’ integration process for their 2024 draft class. All 32 NFL teams are currently in Phase One of the offseason workout schedule.
These minicamps serve to foster connections among rookies and undrafted free agents while coaches familiarize them with NFL strategies. In about a month, the Colts will reconvene for mandatory minicamp from June 4th to 6th. Before the team hits the field at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., for full practices, they’ll engage in Organized Team Activities (OTA’s) and minicamp to help rookies build confidence in less pressured situations.
During the draft in Detroit, the Colts showed a willingness to take strategic risks. They picked the first defensive player and later traded back to secure a top receiver prospect. Among their nine draft picks, first-rounder Laiatu Latu and second-rounder Adonai Mitchell stand out, poised to bring more dynamism to both offense and defense. General Manager Chris Ballard addressed multiple positions of need during the draft, although the search for a standout tight end continues after lackluster production in 2023. Despite no additions to the tight end or cornerback positions in the offseason, Jelani Woods is set to return after missing the 2023 season due to injuries.
In 2023, the Colts ranked last in the league with a blitz rate of 15.7 percent per quarterback dropback. Latu’s potential to start alongside established defensive tackles DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart could provide Defensive Coordinator Gus Bradley with more flexibility in managing the defensive strategy.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen is firm in his belief that young players need ample repetitions to develop, emphasizing Latu’s consistent practice of deploying his full range of moves to gauge, react to, or counter the offensive linemen’s maneuvers.
The strategic use of split-second decisions in executing his attack plan could significantly enhance Latu’s success rate, transitioning from practice scenarios to actual game situations at Lucas Oil Stadium. With the Colts boasting one of the league’s youngest rosters, ranked third youngest in 2023, the return of seasoned players like center Ryan Kelly and long snapper Luke Rhodes, both turning 31 this year, adds valuable experience.

An intriguing aspect of training camp centers around how Colts receivers coach Reggie Wayne nurtures Mitchell’s talents to maximize his impact in his rookie season.
Given the team’s reliance on quarterback Anthony Richardson, Mitchell’s proficiency across a wide range of routes could transform him into a reliable possession receiver with the capacity to make game-changing plays, particularly on crucial third-down situations. Colts area scout Anthony Coughlan observed Mitchell’s physical attributes and his unwavering confidence, honed through experiences at successful collegiate programs, notably contributing to Texas Longhorns’ historic College Football Playoff run in 2023.
