BREAKING NEWS: Diamondbacks’ 24-years old key man to return with mega agreement
Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo expressed optimism about his imminent return during a recent interview on the D-backs’ pregame radio show. Perdomo, who has been sidelined since April 7 due to a torn right meniscus that required surgery, indicated that he aims to return to action by the end of this month.
While manager Torey Lovullo refrained from specifying a precise timeline for Perdomo’s return, he acknowledged the player’s positive progress in his recovery. Lovullo emphasized Perdomo’s excellent condition and noted that once he resumes on-field activities, a clearer timeline for his return will emerge.
Perdomo disclosed that he dedicates 5-7 hours per day to rehabilitation at Salt River Fields, followed by attending Diamondbacks’ home games at Chase Field to support his teammates. Expressing eagerness to contribute from the sidelines, Perdomo described his role as bringing energy to the dugout and cheering on his teammates.
During his rehabilitation process, Perdomo has been joined by other notable Diamondbacks players on the mend, including center fielder Alek Thomas, pitcher Merrill Kelly, and shortstop prospect Jordan Lawlar. Perdomo emphasized the collective determination among them to overcome their injuries and return to action swiftly.
What does Geraldo Perdomo need to do before hitting the field?
Perdomo’s return progress includes engaging in live at-bats, hitting drills in the cages, and fielding ground balls. However, according to Lovullo, there are still challenges ahead.
“Running, bearing his own body weight,” Lovullo explained. “Running, making turns, and then the agility to initiate and halt movements. These will be significant milestones for him.”
Lovullo highlighted that while Perdomo’s batting practice and defensive drills are progressing, there’s a need for patience regarding his timing at the plate. He anticipates it may take a handful of at-bats, around five to ten, for Perdomo to fully regain his timing. However, Lovullo expressed confidence that Perdomo’s defensive skills won’t be an issue, especially once he can move fluidly on his feet.
In Perdomo’s absence, Kevin Newman has primarily filled in at shortstop, with Blaze Alexander also getting some playing time.
When asked about what he misses most during his recovery, Perdomo simply expressed a longing for being out on the field playing games. Specifically, he mentioned the pressure-packed 3-2 counts, particularly with the top of the order batting.
