BREAKING NEWS: Former NL MVP linked to Yankees in blockbuster trade sideline with huge agreement
The New York Yankees have been mentioned as a team capable of executing a major trade for St. Louis Cardinals’ star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt this season.
Zack Cook of SportsGrid explained why acquiring Goldschmidt could be a strategic move for the Yankees given their current team dynamics (h/t Patrick McAvoy of Fan Nation’s Inside the Pinstripes):
“Despite increased output from their veterans this season, speculation about a potential trade between the Yankees and Cardinals involving Paul Goldschmidt emerged last year,” Cook noted. “With Juan Soto entering free agency next season, the Yankees need to go all-in to secure a World Series win this year. Although Goldschmidt has faced challenges this season, a move to New York could significantly boost his confidence,” Cook wrote.
Paul Goldschmidt could turn the Yankees into overwhelming World Series favorites despite 2024 struggles
Despite Paul Goldschmidt’s dismal start to the 2024 MLB season, his acquisition would still demand a high price. His career-worst .205/.287/.282 slash line and 57 strikeouts in 156 at-bats wouldn’t lower the cost for the former 2022 National League MVP.
However, Goldschmidt would bring numerous advantages to New York. When at his best, he hits for both power and average, as evidenced by his 91 home runs, .293 batting average, and 145 OPS+ from 2021-2023. His defense at first base is also outstanding; in 2024, he has 318 putouts, 26 assists, 40 double plays turned, and no errors. Additionally, he has never had a season with a fielding percentage below .993.
How could the Yankees pull off a trade for Goldschmidt?
Goldschmidt’s early season struggles should be viewed as an anomaly. However, acquiring him would likely require the Yankees to part with one or more of their key players. Anthony Rizzo, who also plays first base, could be a logical candidate for a trade due to positional redundancy. Additionally, Juan Soto, who is performing at an MVP level in 2024 but is in the final year of his contract, might also be considered.
Ideally, the Yankees would aim to create a formidable trio with Goldschmidt, Soto, and Aaron Judge. To achieve this, they might consider trading one of their top pitchers to bolster their batting lineup and infield. If the Cardinals decide to trade the seven-time All-Star this year, the Yankees should seize the opportunity to bring him to the Bronx and aim for their first World Series title in the Aaron Judge era.
