BREAKING NEWS: MLB connects the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies in their trade deadline chase of certain key man
A prominent MLB insider suggests that if the Oakland Athletics decide to trade star closer Mason Miller, a blockbuster deal would make a lot of sense for both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs.
As of today’s games, the Phillies and Cubs are among the leading teams in the National League, each vying for the top spot in their respective divisions. They are seen as serious postseason contenders and are expected to be active before the July 30 trade deadline.
One major area of concern for both teams is their bullpen. While they each have some reliable relievers, additional support would be beneficial, and Mason Miller from the Oakland A’s could be an ideal target. Although there is speculation about whether Oakland will entertain trade offers, Bleacher Report MLB insider Jon Heyman argued on Thursday that they should consider it.
“They need to at least explore [a trade], and if I were them, I’d look to get a significant return for Mason Miller,” Heyman stated. “Despite the team’s commendable performance this year, they aren’t going to contend, and their future location and fan base are uncertain. It would be wise for their long-term prospects to seriously consider trading Mason Miller.”
If Miller becomes available, who does Heyman see as the main contenders? According to him, the Phillies and Cubs are strong candidates. He also mentioned the Orioles and the Dodgers as potential suitors.
“The Phillies have been mentioned. The Orioles could use bullpen help. The Cubs need bullpen reinforcement. You can’t rule out the Dodgers. Will the Cubs address their bullpen? They need to. They have a solid team with good defense, and now [Seiya] Suzuki and [Cody] Bellinger are back… the bullpen remains a question.”
Last week, it was reported that the Athletics are seeking a substantial return for Miller, including two top-100-level prospects from any interested team.
