BREAKING NEWS: Ohio State football add another standout player from transfer portal
The Ohio State football team was very active in the transfer portal immediately after the season ended, acquiring players across various positions. They secured a top-tier running back, one of the nation’s best safeties, a new starting quarterback, and a potentially new starting offensive lineman.
However, once Spring arrived, the Buckeyes’ activity in the transfer portal significantly decreased. It appeared they wouldn’t be adding anyone else. They did eventually add a walk-on punter recently, but up until Friday morning, they hadn’t recruited any scholarship players from the Spring portal.
That changed on Friday morning when Ohio State added Keenan Nelson Jr. from South Carolina. Nelson, a safety who played two seasons with the Gamecocks, redshirted in 2022 and has accumulated just 13 tackles in his collegiate career.
Coming out of high school, Nelson Jr. was a four-star recruit, indicating he has considerable talent. It’s notable that Ohio State decided to bolster their safety position, despite already having depth there.
I believe Nelson Jr. will benefit Ohio State, though probably not this season. He is unlikely to see much playing time given the presence of Lathan Ransom and Caleb Downs as the primary safeties, with Jordan Hancock also playing the nickel back role.
It’s uncertain if the Buckeyes will add more players from the transfer portal, but given their current quiet stance, it seems they are satisfied with their roster heading into the Summer and Fall.
