JUST IN: Husker key man working to make Australia’s Olympics team
Former Husker Jack McVeigh was selected as one of 17 players invited to Australia’s Olympic training camp for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
Following the late June training camp, Australia will play four exhibition games leading up to the Olympics. They will host China in a two-game series from July 2-4 before heading to Abu Dhabi for the USA Basketball Showcase. Australia is scheduled to face the United States on July 15 and Serbia on July 16. Australia secured a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
McVeigh has been part of the Australian national program pool since his debut in 2019. His latest appearance was in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier, where he averaged 10.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game across three games.
After playing for Nebraska from 2016-18, McVeigh has had a professional career in Australia and Germany since the 2017-18 season. He had an impressive 2023-24 season with the Tasmania JackJumpers, winning the NBL championship. He averaged 16.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, shooting 52 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range. McVeigh was named MVP of the championship series against Melbourne United, averaging 17.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists over the five-game series.
McVeigh played three seasons at Nebraska before beginning his professional career, with his best season in 2016-17, averaging 7.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in 30 games, including 11 starts.
