BREAKING: Another Sabres key man and Coach Named Winnipeg Jets Head Coach
The Winnipeg Jets announced Scott Arniel as their new head coach on Friday. Arniel, who previously served as the Associate Coach for the Jets, steps into the role following Rick Bowness’ retirement. During the 2023-2024 season, Arniel twice took over head coaching duties when Bowness was temporarily absent for personal reasons, making his promotion a natural progression.
Buffalo Sabres fans will recognize Arniel from his tenure as a player (1986-1990) and assistant coach (2002-2006), during which he worked under Lindy Ruff. Arniel and Ruff also played together for three seasons in Buffalo.
Speculation: Could Jason Karmanos Be On Hurricanes’ GM Radar?
Arniel is now among the current NHL head coaches with ties to the Sabres, joining Lindy Ruff and Colorado’s Jared Bednar, who played 19 games for the Rochester Americans in the 1997-1998 season. Additionally, Arniel joins Philadelphia’s John Tortorella as former Sabres assistant coaches now leading NHL teams.
Arniel brings significant head coaching experience to the Jets, having led the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2010 to 2012. His assistant coaching resume also includes stints with the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals.
Arniel is the fifth head coach to be appointed since the regular season ended. Following Lindy Ruff’s rehiring by the Sabres in April, Travis Green joined the Ottawa Senators, Craig Berube took over the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Sheldon Keefe was hired by the New Jersey Devils.
Two head coaching positions remain open. The San Jose Sharks are seeking a new coach for their rebuilding team after dismissing David Quinn, and the Seattle Kraken are looking for a new leader to guide them back to the playoffs following Dave Hakstol’s departure.
