BREAKING: 2nd-Year Wide Receiver Retires Weeks After Injury News Surfaces
A second-year NFL wide receiver has reportedly announced their retirement after sustaining an injury while with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers had to release the player due to the injury earlier in the offseason.
The Green Bay Packers signed Thyrick Pitts Jr. in December
According to the Packers’ website, the team signed Thyrick Pitts Jr. to their practice squad in December. Pitts, a standout in college, is a 6-2, 201-pound rookie who was initially signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent from the University of Delaware in May 2023. After being released by the Bears in early August, he was claimed off waivers by the New England Patriots, where he spent training camp and had a brief stint on their practice squad.
In college, Pitts played in 59 games, amassing 172 receptions for 2,429 yards (14.1 avg.) and 23 touchdowns. He earned first-team All-CAA honors for the 2020-21 season, second-team All-CAA for the 2021 fall season, and third-team All-CAA for 2022. Pitts will be wearing No. 16 for the Packers.
Pitts was placed on injured reserve earlier this month
Thyrick Pitts was with the Packers this offseason. According to CBS Sports, the Packers placed Pitts on injured reserve earlier this May after he went unclaimed on waivers. The following day, the Packers waived him from IR with an injury settlement. The specific nature of Pitts’ injury remains unclear.
Pitts announced his retirement
According to Zac Ventola with Patriots Today, Thyrick Pitts announced his retirement via Instagram, revealing his plans to pursue a new career in financial management. In his post, Pitts expressed gratitude for his football journey, saying:
“Since I was 4 years old, I’ve had a football in my hand. I’ve been very fortunate to play this game every fall for the past 21 years. Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey and all the family I have made along the way. You’ve helped me to fulfill my childhood dreams of playing college football and playing in the NFL.
Today, I’m officially hanging up my cleats and turning to the next chapter of my life. I’m excited to announce that I’ll be joining a multi-million dollar financial management team at Ameriprise Financial. With all the support I’ve received along the way, I want to pay it forward and give back to the community. My goal is to assist people in managing their finances, understanding financial concepts, and helping families create financial plans for the future.
Onwards and Upwards!”
We wish Pitts the best in his future endeavors.
