BREAKING: Kentucky football on QB key man transfer
LEXINGTON, Ky. — With less than 100 days until the college football season kicks off, Kentucky’s roster under Mark Stoops will feature three transfer quarterbacks.
Brock Vandagriff, a transfer from Georgia, is expected to start. Beau Allen has returned to UK after initially starting his career as a Wildcat. Recently added is Gavin Wimsatt, who previously starred at Owensboro and spent three years at Rutgers.
In today’s collegiate landscape, Kentucky is far from unique. Almost every team has a transfer quarterback ready to lead the offense in 2024. For example:
— Louisville: Tyler Shough, a Texas Tech transfer, is expected to thrive for Jeff Brohm if he stays healthy. Shough started his career at Oregon before moving to Lubbock in 2021, completing 69.6% of his passes in his first season but has faced injury challenges since.
— Western Kentucky: TJ Finley, who played for Auburn and passed for 3,439 yards at Texas State last season, will compete with bowl hero Caden Veltkamp for the starting position at WKU.
— Vanderbilt: Nate Johnson, who substituted for an injured Cameron Rising at Utah, and Diego Pavia, who threw 26 touchdowns at New Mexico State last season, are new additions. Pavia missed Vandy’s spring practice.
— Arkansas: Taylen Green, who worked with new UK offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan at Boise State, where he threw for 25 touchdowns and rushed for over 1,000 yards over the past two seasons, joins Arkansas.
— Boise State: Malachi Nelson, who transferred from Southern Cal before Hamdan left for UK, was in competition to succeed Caleb Williams before becoming a Bronco.
— Washington: Will Rogers, after posting impressive numbers under Mike Leach at Mississippi State but struggling in a new system last season, begins anew under Huskies coach Jedd Fisch.
— Mississippi State: Blake Shapen, the ex-Baylor quarterback who threw 31 touchdowns over the past two seasons, is the frontrunner to replace Rogers in Starkville.
— Georgia: Jaden Rashada, the Arizona State transfer, steps into Vandagriff’s backup role behind Heisman Trophy candidate Carson Beck. Rashada made headlines for suing Florida over a mishandled NIL deal.
— Notre Dame: Riley Leonard, an ACC transfer, will lead the Irish after last year’s ex-Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman. Leonard is a dual-threat quarterback from Duke.
— Ohio State: Will Howard, with four years at Kansas State, and Julian Sayin, the top 2024 quarterback recruit who left Alabama after Nick Saban’s retirement, join the Buckeyes.
— North Carolina State: Grayson McCall, the Coastal Carolina star, passed for over 2,000 yards in three of his four seasons as a starter.
— Oregon: Dillon Gabriel, with three years at UCF and two seasons at Oklahoma, replaces Bo Nix. Dante Moore, a highly recruited freshman from UCLA last year, also joins the Ducks.
— Florida State: DJ Uiagalelei, who spent three years at Clemson and threw 21 touchdowns last season at Oregon State, now has the task of replacing Jordan Travis in Tallahassee.
— Southern Cal: Jayden Maiava, who passed for 3,085 yards as a freshman at UNLV, joins Lincoln Riley in Los Angeles.
— North Carolina: Max Johnson, son of former NFL quarterback Brad Johnson, is on his third school after stints at LSU and Texas A&M. He is the favorite to replace Drake Maye.
— Miami (Fla.): Cameron Ward, who threw for nearly 7,000 yards and 48 touchdowns in two seasons at Washington State after starring at Incarnate Word, brings his talents to South Beach.
