The Miami Marlins have traded for right-hander Shaun Anderson from the Texas Rangers in exchange for cash considerations. To make room on their 40-man roster, the Marlins have designated right-hander Woo-Suk Go for assignment, according to Craig Mish of The Miami Herald. Anderson was recently designated for assignment by the Rangers on Sunday after being added to their roster following a minor league deal signed in April. Anderson, a third-round pick by the Boston Red Sox in 2016, made his MLB debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2019.

Anderson pitched to mediocre results in a swing role, posting a 5.44 ERA in 96 innings across 28 appearances (16 starts). Since then, major league innings have been hard to come by for Anderson, who made just 25 big league appearances across five organizations between 2020 and 2022, during which he recorded a 6.85 ERA. These struggles led Anderson to sign with the KIA Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization in 2023, where he found success as a starter, posting a 3.76 ERA in 14 appearances. Anderson returned to MLB on a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies late in the season, but he struggled, giving up 28 runs (including 11 home runs) in starts with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate.

The Rangers Took a Chance on Anderson

When Anderson was added to the roster earlier this month, he made two appearances for the Rangers, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts, resulting in a 5.40 ERA over 3 1/3 innings. Anderson is in his final minor league option year, allowing him to move between Miami and Triple-A Jacksonville without going through waivers.

Woo-Suk Go, 25, was one of the top relievers in the KBO and joined MLB through the posting system. After signing a two-year, $4.5 million contract with the San Diego Padres, they quickly parted ways with him, and he was sent to the Marlins as part of the Luis Arráez trade. Go has posted a 3.00 ERA in nine innings at Triple-A since the trade. Scouting reports highlight his fastball reaching 98 mph in the KBO, though it was clocked at 92-94 mph during Padres’ spring training.

Given his $4.5 million contract, Go is likely to clear waivers if placed there. Miami has until Tuesday to explore trade options before potentially placing him on waivers. If he clears, he will likely be assigned to Jacksonville, where he can work on redeveloping his game before aiming for a return to the majors.
