Miami Dolphins huge contract decision directly impacts Tua Tagovailoa’s future
The Miami Dolphins have finalized a significant three-year, $84.75 million (£67.5m) contract with wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, amidst lingering uncertainty surrounding quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s future.
Earlier this month, the Dolphins were negotiating with Tagovailoa, who reportedly declined their offer. Just two weeks later, they awarded Waddle a substantial new deal, placing him among the highest-paid receivers in the league and showcasing their commitment to rewarding key players generously.
Tagovailoa is entering the final year of his rookie contract after enjoying his most successful season in 2023. According to ESPN, the former Alabama star is seeking a salary on par with quarterbacks Jared Goff, Jalen Hurts, and Joe Burrow, each earning over $50 million (£40m) annually in the past year.
With training camp approaching, the Dolphins might begin the season without having secured their quarterback beyond this year.
Having allocated nearly $25 million (£20m) per season for Waddle, the Dolphins’ budget is stretched thin as they aim to bolster their Super Bowl aspirations, already having committed substantial funds to players like Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, Terron Armstead, Jalen Ramsey, Jordyn Brooks, and Austin Jackson in the upcoming years.
To accommodate both Waddle and Tagovailoa, the Dolphins will need to make significant decisions, potentially offloading some high earners, as Tagovailoa is anticipated to demand around $55 million annually.
Hesitance to pay Tagovailoa may be influenced by his injury history, having missed several games in recent seasons. His arm strength has also been questioned, particularly noticeable in Hill’s absence. Nonetheless, even after extending Waddle’s contract, the Dolphins appear eager to promptly negotiate with their quarterback.
Dolphins GM Will Grier recently stated: “I think we’re hopeful. When you go through these things… these are deals that very rarely come together quickly. There are a lot of pieces and moving parts. We’ve had positive discussions so far, and we’ll keep working here throughout the offseason.”
