BREAKING NEWS: Seattle Mariners to sign 27-years old key from Washington Nationals
According to a source confirmed by FOX 13 Seattle on Monday, the Seattle Mariners are bringing in outfielder Victor Robles, who was once a highly regarded prospect for the Washington Nationals.
Robles, aged 27, was released by the Nationals on Saturday following his designation for assignment by the team the previous week. He had struggled with a batting average of just .120, scoring three runs and stealing four bases in 14 games this season with Washington.
To make room for Robles on the roster, the Mariners sent outfielder Jonatan Clase down to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. Clase, aged 22, had played in 15 games for Seattle this season, making his MLB debut on April 15. He has posted a batting average of .176 with three runs, a double, three RBIs, and two stolen bases.
During his rookie season in 2019, Robles was a key player for the Nationals, starting as their center fielder and contributing to their World Series victory. He recorded a .255 batting average with 33 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, 28 stolen bases, and a .745 OPS in 155 games for Washington. Additionally, he led all center fielders in defensive runs saved with 22, according to Fielding Bible.
However, Robles struggled to maintain his rookie success over the following three years, and a back injury limited him to just 36 games last season.
With Robles now on board, the Mariners gain a valuable asset for base running and defensive duties off the bench, while Clase will have the opportunity to get consistent playing time back in Triple-A.
