BREAKING: Detroit Tigers made a shocking statement on their current superstar
The Detroit Tigers have benched shortstop Javier Baez, adding him to the 10-day injured list due to inflammation in his lumbar spine. In reaction, the team has brought up infielder Ryan Kreidler from Triple-A Toledo.
Baez’s Struggles with Back Issues
Throughout the season, Javier Baez has been grappling with sporadic back issues, which intensified notably on Sunday. Following a discussion with manager A.J. Hinch about his condition, Baez opted to confront the problem head-on. “I want to contribute to this team over the long haul,” Baez emphasized. “I need to take this step and aim to return for the latter part of the season.”
At 31 years of age, Baez will travel to Florida for consultations and initial treatment before commencing rehabilitation in Detroit. The precise duration of his absence remains uncertain but is expected to extend beyond the initial 10-day period.
“It’s becoming increasingly challenging for him to feel capable of completing a game,” explained Hinch. The Tigers confirmed that Baez has undergone imaging and will continue evaluations with several doctors to address his soreness and persistent back problems.
Baez’s Offensive Struggles in 2024
In the 2024 season, Baez has encountered considerable offensive struggles, batting only .183 with one home run in 196 plate appearances. This underwhelming performance has fueled frustration among Detroit fans, who have often voiced their dissatisfaction by booing him at Comerica Park. Despite initially showing promise with the Tigers after signing a lucrative six-year, $140 million contract in 2022, Baez’s productivity has gradually diminished.
Ryan Kreidler Steps Up
With Baez sidelined and Ryan Kreidler called up, Kreidler is slated to make his first start in Tuesday’s series opener against the Washington Nationals. Despite a challenging start to the season due to a fractured finger, the 26-year-old Kreidler has recently shown improvement during his time at Triple-A Toledo.
Kreidler is expected to split shortstop duties with Zach McKinstry, with Andy Ibanez also likely to see some playing time at the position. Hinch elaborated, saying, “It will resemble a bit of a timeshare. Kreidler will be in the lineup against all left-handed pitchers, but he’ll also receive opportunities against right-handed pitching.”
Looking Ahead
With Baez sidelined, the Tigers will lean on a mix of players to cover the gap at shortstop. Their capacity to adjust and sustain performance during this stretch will be pivotal as they push forward in the season. The spotlight now shifts to Kreidler, presenting him with an opportunity to showcase his abilities at the major league level, while Baez focuses on recuperation and aiming for a comeback in the latter part of the season.
