HUGE BOOST: Mets 29-years old superstar leaving to Yankees with huge contract agreement
Pete Alonso might not have to leave New York at the trade deadline if the Mets opt to trade him to a crosstown rival. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Yankees are a potential destination for Alonso ahead of the July 30 deadline. The Yankees are seeking to bolster the right side of their infield with more production.
“Pete Alonso is expected to be the biggest power bat traded at the deadline,” Bowden wrote, noting that the Astros, Mariners, Yankees, Giants, Cubs, and Twins are all possible destinations for the three-time All-Star. If the Mets trade Alonso, they intend to make a strong effort to re-sign him in the offseason, as both the team and Alonso, affectionately known as the Polar Bear, have a mutual fondness for New York.
Bowden also mentioned that the Cubs have already initiated contact with the Mets regarding Alonso.
Currently, the Yankees’ first base options, Anthony Rizzo (.623 OPS) and DJ LeMahieu (.586 OPS), have underperformed this season, combining for only 26 RBIs at a position typically expected to deliver significant power.
Alonso, who becomes a free agent after the 2024 season, is the Mets’ top hitter and most valuable trade asset, leading the team with 14 home runs, 32 RBIs, and a 132 OPS+. The Mets, with a 28-36 record, are in fourth place in the NL East and are 3.5 games behind in the NL Wild Card race.
Since his record-breaking Rookie of the Year season in 2019, where he hit 53 homers, Alonso has been a fan favorite in Queens. He has twice finished in the top-10 in NL MVP voting and has hit the most home runs in MLB since his debut season.
Bowden also mentioned starting pitcher Luis Severino as a significant trade candidate alongside Alonso. ESPN previously reported that the Yankees might pursue Severino at the trade deadline after not re-signing him last offseason.
