Anthony Rizzo will undergo additional tests on Monday to assess the extent of his injury. The New York Yankees first baseman exited Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox early after an awkward collision while running the bases. In the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 9-3 defeat, Rizzo hit a ground ball and sprinted toward first base. Upon reaching the bag, he collided with Red Sox reliever Brennan Bernardino, landing awkwardly on his right wrist, which he clutched immediately as he fell to the ground. Although Rizzo was safe as Bernardino dropped the toss just before contact, he was quickly removed from the game and replaced by pinch-runner Oswaldo Cabrera. The severity of Rizzo’s injury and the duration of his potential absence remain unknown.

“We’ll see,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “The initial imaging was negative, but he’s experiencing pain in several areas of his lower arm. He’ll undergo extensive testing tomorrow to determine the extent of the injury and what we’re dealing with.”

Rizzo, 34, has a .223 batting average with eight home runs and 28 RBIs this season, his third full year with the Yankees.

The injury on Sunday was reminiscent of one he sustained last year when he collided with Fernando Tatis Jr. at first base, which ultimately ended his season early due to post-concussion syndrome.

Though the Yankees were only down by one run when Rizzo left the game, the Red Sox surged ahead to secure a six-run victory at Fenway Park, aided by Connor Wong’s two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh.
