BREAK: LSU Football land defensive top star
Heading into the final weekend of official visits, LSU’s football team boasts the second-ranked recruiting class in the nation, as per On3. Despite three weekends of official visits this summer, LSU has yet to secure a commitment. However, the team has positioned itself favorably with numerous top recruits.
The current concern with this recruiting class is the scarcity of defensive talent compared to the strong offensive recruits LSU has gathered. Presently, the class includes only three defensive players: Jaboree Antoine, Charles Ross, and Keylan Moses, all highly regarded prospects.
The robust offensive recruiting class is partly attributed to the star power LSU has secured. Early commitments from top-rated recruit Bryce Underwood and leading running back Harlem Berry have attracted other talents, enhancing the class.
However, what’s lacking in this recruiting cohort is a defensive equivalent to Underwood and Berry, capable of drawing additional talent.
Nevertheless, LSU has positioned itself well to secure some of these defensive standouts. DJ Pickett, after a visit to Baton Rouge, has LSU at the top of his list, although he plans to delay his commitment until October, potentially missing out on other top talents.
Recently, LSU left a strong impression on Jonah Williams, a standout in two sports, though Oklahoma poses stiff competition. Top-100 recruit Damien Shanklin is expected to announce his decision in August, with LSU seen as the frontrunner to sway him from in-state Notre Dame. Additionally, Bo Davis has positioned LSU favorably to secure top defensive tackles from Texas, but the outcome remains uncertain.
The easiest way to build back the defense is recruiting
Last season, LSU’s championship-level offense was overshadowed by one of the weakest defenses in recent memory. A significant overhaul at the defensive coordinator position is crucial for defensive improvement. However, acquiring top talent is paramount for constructing a championship-caliber defense. LSU has a strong track record of developing defensive players into NFL talent, rivaled by few other schools. This history should facilitate attracting top recruits, particularly under the guidance of proven coaches like Corey Raymond and Bo Davis.
