The New York Rangers signed Kaapo Kakko to a one-year contract after the winger became a restricted free agency this summer. The short-term and cheap value of this agreement fueled rumors regarding Kakko’s future with the franchise, with a potential trade looming for the poor depth forward.

Kaapo Kakko is rumored to be moved at some point this offseason

The New York Rangers have had a dynamic offseason, starting with signing Kaapo Kakko and escalating further with Barclay Goodrow’s waiver placement and subsequent claim by the San Jose Sharks. Amidst these changes, there’s speculation about a potential trade involving Kakko as part of Chris Drury’s plans.

Vince Mercogliano of Lohud confirmed rumors on the New Ice City podcast, stating, “I do think Kakko is already being discussed in trade talks.” Colin Stephenson of Newsday added his perspective, suggesting, “I would presume they’ll move on from him.”

It’s not surprising that the Rangers are considering moving Kakko, who was drafted second overall in 2019. Despite his development into a solid defensive winger on the third offensive line, it seems he may not fulfill his initial draft potential while in New York.

While Kakko has been effective defensively on the third line, his production in terms of scoring depth has been lacking. With Goodrow’s departure, a trade involving Kakko could potentially help the Rangers strengthen their bottom six forwards, aiming to balance offensive depth across the roster.

What could the Rangers be looking for in exchange for Kakko?

Due to his underwhelming performance during the 2023-24 season and playoffs, Kaapo Kakko’s trade value is currently diminished. Any potential return package in a trade would likely reflect this lower value, unless the Rangers include additional assets to sweeten the deal. Given their limited draft capital, focusing on adding prospects rather than draft picks would be a strategic move.

The Rangers have specific roster gaps to address, notably a significant vacancy on the first line. However, addressing this issue through the free-agent market might be more effective than involving Kakko in a blockbuster trade. Instead, the primary objective in trading Kakko should be to enhance offensive production on the third line.

Securing a depth forward who can contribute both defensively and offensively, or creating salary cap flexibility to sign such a player, should be the main goal in any potential Kakko trade. This approach would help bolster the Rangers’ depth and improve their scoring capabilities without compromising the potential for significant roster adjustments elsewhere.
