Michigan football landed top rated commitment has to a high ceiling
Donovan Johnson is one of the most intriguing recruits for Michigan football in the 2025 class. Despite being a four-star running back who has faced injuries over the past two seasons, Johnson, who stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 215 pounds, is ranked No. 232 overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings. This ranking is notable given his absence from last season, highlighting his significant potential. Two years ago, he was outstanding, averaging 8.1 yards per carry.
Johnson’s injury last season affected his recruitment, but Michigan extended an offer this summer, impressed by his abilities. If he remains healthy, Johnson could easily be among the top five or ten running backs in the 2025 class.
Charles Power, a recruiting analyst and scout for On3.com, discussed Johnson with EJ Holland of The Wolverine. Power noted Johnson as one of the more complex evaluations in the 2025 cycle. Johnson made a national impression as a freshman at Calvary Christian in Savannah, Georgia, showcasing significant athleticism and an ideal running back build. He transferred to IMG Academy and played a reserve role as a sophomore, but injuries limited his junior season. Consequently, he hasn’t played much substantial football in the last two years.
Power emphasized Johnson’s potential ceiling for the Wolverines. Johnson’s performance at IMG Academy this fall will be crucial in determining his ranking. If he excels, Michigan could have a major steal, irrespective of his current ranking.
“We just want to see more from him on the field,” Power said. “I hope to see much more of him as a senior. Based on recent evaluations, it’s hard to make a definitive assessment. Early on, his physical traits were evident. He ran with power and could break away in the open field, looking like a national prospect. I’m eager to see if he can demonstrate that. Until then, it remains a projection.”
