It’s well known that Yankees veteran infielder Gleyber Torres is struggling in the 2024 season. After being benched for poor performance, Torres is set to return to the lineup on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

However, his season stats over 80 games—a batting average of only .215, an OBP of .294, and a slugging percentage of .333—are disappointing. With Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list, the Yankees urgently need their veterans, especially Torres, to improve their performance.

Potential Trade Scenarios: Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the Radar

If Torres continues to struggle as the late July trade deadline approaches, General Manager Brian Cashman might explore options to replace him.

One potential target is Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the Miami Marlins. Chisholm, who will be a free agent in 2027, is having a solid season with a .260 batting average, 10 homers, and 37 RBIs, along with a 111 wRC+. His dynamic presence on the bases, demonstrated by his 84th percentile ranking in sprint speed, could bring much-needed athleticism to the Yankees’ lineup.

Chisholm’s Fit with the Yankees

Despite his aggressive plate approach, which can be a drawback as shown by his 34th percentile chase rate and 25th percentile whiff rate, Chisholm’s potential remains largely untapped. His ability to barrel the ball, ranking in the 83rd percentile, highlights his hidden power. Furthermore, Chisholm’s versatility goes beyond the infield; he is also capable of playing centerfield, providing the Yankees with additional strategic flexibility.

Potential Trade Package and Prospects

Acquiring a player like Chisholm would come at a significant cost. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, a potential trade package could start with centering around right-hander Will Warren. Warren, a 25-year-old pitcher, has struggled this season with a 6.53 ERA over 70.1 innings at Triple-A Scranton, showing some regression from his previous strong performances.

Additionally, the suggested package would include Everson Pereira, a 23-year-old outfielder currently recovering from a UCL injury and slated for Tommy John surgery, and Jace Avina, a promising 21-year-old currently playing at High-A Hudson Valley.

This proposed trade package reflects the Marlins’ interest in acquiring young talent with potential upside, despite the risks and current challenges these players face.

Strategic Decisions Ahead for the Yankees

Acquiring Chisholm could indeed be a significant move for the Yankees, providing immediate impact across multiple facets of the team. This trade could help fill the gaps created by Torres’s struggles, offering a dynamic player who contributes both offensively and defensively.

In light of this acquisition, the Yankees might contemplate benching Torres or exploring trade opportunities to move him for pitching. Such a move would enable another team to take a chance on Torres potentially rebounding, perhaps under more favorable terms after a challenging season in New York.
