The Miami Heat are facing several key roster decisions this offseason, with the future of star player Jimmy Butler generating much of the buzz. Amidst this, Miami also has the opportunity to explore potential trades while retaining Butler.
One intriguing proposal from Bleacher Report suggests the Heat could acquire Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young. The Hawks might be considering a rebuild after trading Dejounte Murray following the NBA draft.
The proposed trade involves Miami sending Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, and Nikola Jovic to Atlanta in exchange for Young. Additionally, the Heat would send two future first-round picks (2029 and 2031) to the Hawks as part of the deal.
“You give up Tyler Herro, who I think goes in any star deal,” the Bleacher Report analyst explained during a June 29, 2024, live stream on potential NBA trades before free agency. “He’s just the piece waiting to be moved.
“You give up Duncan who makes the money work, as well as give the Hawks a shooter they could potentially flip again. Jovic [is] a young player and then two very interesting first-round picks with Jimmy Butler’s future up in the air.”
This trade would allow Miami to add a dynamic point guard in Young while Atlanta acquires valuable assets to facilitate their potential rebuild. The inclusion of Herro, Robinson, and Jovic, along with the future picks, makes the proposal a significant move for both teams.
Heat Guard Tyler Herro Still Has 3 Seasons Remaining on a 4-Year, $120 Million Contract
Miami might be motivated to trade Tyler Herro due to his four-year, $120 million contract, which has three seasons remaining and carries a sizable $29 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season.
The Hawks, so far, have been unable to find a trade deal for Trae Young that meets their needs. While acquiring Herro would give Atlanta a legitimate scorer, his recent injury history is a concern. Herro played in just 42 games last season for Miami, averaging 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 39.6% from long range.
The Hawks might prefer the future draft picks in the proposed trade to be sooner than 2029. However, the inclusion of Herro, along with Duncan Robinson, Nikola Jovic, and the draft picks, could make the deal appealing enough for Atlanta to consider moving forward with their rebuild. For Miami, adding Trae Young would significantly enhance their backcourt and offensive capabilities, positioning them as strong contenders in the Eastern Conference.
Will the Hawks Hit the Reset Button by Striking a Blockbuster Trade With Trae Young?
With the departure of Dejounte Murray, the Atlanta Hawks could take two different approaches moving forward. The first option is to rebuild the roster around their remaining star guard, Trae Young, by adding complementary pieces to maximize his talents.
Alternatively, Atlanta might opt to hit the reset button entirely, which could involve trading more starters like Young and Clint Capela in the coming months. This approach would focus on building around their new No. 1 pick, Zaccharie Risacher, and other young talents, setting the foundation for a future contender.
Trae Young still has three seasons left on his five-year, $215 million contract, with a player option for the final season, allowing him to become a free agent as early as 2026. Given this, the Hawks have some flexibility in deciding their path forward, whether to retool around Young or embark on a more extensive rebuild.
Trae Young Prefers a Trade to the Lakers, Spurs or Pelicans: Insider
Before trading Dejounte Murray, Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer reported that the Atlanta Hawks were expected to explore trade possibilities for Trae Young, among others.
Fischer mentioned that Young has expressed interest in teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs, and New Orleans Pelicans as potential landing spots. Miami also makes sense as a team that could rejuvenate Young’s value due to its strong reputation in the league.
“The Hawks are certainly expected to now gauge trade possibilities for Murray, All-Star guard Trae Young, Clint Capela and the rest of their rostered players who aren’t named Jalen Johnson and Zaccharie Risacher,” Fischer detailed in a June 28 article titled, “Brandon Ingram expected to become available for trade as wing market comes into focus.”
“Young does have the Pelicans in mind of preferred possible next teams, league sources told Yahoo Sports, in addition to the Spurs and Lakers, but Young’s fit has never made much sense for a New Orleans situation that currently features C.J. McCollum in its backcourt.”
Given the uncertain future of the Hawks’ roster, exploring trade options for Young could lead to significant changes, potentially aligning him with one of his preferred teams. Meanwhile, Miami’s interest in acquiring Young indicates their willingness to make bold moves to enhance their championship aspirations.
