Report: Another key man announced commitment to NDSU Football with a huge agreement
WESTHOPE, N.D. (KMOT) – One of the region’s top athletes is transitioning from nine-man football to a Division I-FCS powerhouse.
After leading his team to a state basketball championship, Westhope-Newburg multi-sport star Walker Braaten dedicated three months to attending football camps and making visits before committing to North Dakota State.
On June 16, Braaten announced his verbal commitment to Bison football via social media after spending another weekend in Fargo.
“I received a lot of support from the coaches during camp, which is when I made my decision. My family also backed me up and was happy for me,” Braaten shared.
Before choosing NDSU, Braaten considered several schools, including North Dakota, South Dakota State, and Minnesota. He explained what made the Bison stand out.
“There was something special about the camp at NDSU; it just felt right and gave me the push I needed,” said Braaten.
Braaten, who plays quarterback and safety for the nine-man Westhope-Newburg Sioux, was recruited by the Bison as a safety.
“It will be different not playing both sides of the ball, but I’m excited to play safety. I enjoy playing quarterback too, but it’s much more complex at the college level,” Braaten noted.
Before heading to Fargo and focusing on one sport and position, Braaten has unfinished business in Westhope.
“We aim to win more championships here. Our goal is another football championship and hopefully another basketball title,” said Braaten.
The Sioux aim to improve on their semifinal finish in last year’s nine-man playoffs.
Braaten was a first-team all-state selection at quarterback and in basketball last season. He also participates in golf for the Sioux and baseball for Renville County.
