BREAKING: Rangers Confirms The Signing Of Another Top Star
The New York Rangers have completed another task on their summer agenda by securing depth defenseman Braden Schneider for two more seasons. With several star players nearing the end of their contracts next year, GM Chris Drury had limited flexibility to offer a significant contract this year. Nevertheless, he managed the Schneider contract adeptly, delivering a solid, team-friendly bridge deal.
Rangers sign Schneider to a 2 x $2.2 million deal
According to Elliotte Friedman, Braden Schneider’s two-year contract has an average annual value of $2.2 million. Following this signing, the Rangers will have just over $5 million in cap space to negotiate a new contract with fellow defenseman Ryan Lindgren.
This contract is advantageous for both the organization and Schneider. At only 22 years old, Schneider has ample time to prove himself on this short-term deal, potentially earning a significant pay raise in two years. The low value of the deal also benefits the Rangers, providing them with more flexibility to extend larger contracts to upcoming 2025 free agents Alexis Lafreniere and Igor Shesterkin.
What role will Schneider play this season?
Now that Schneider is secured for the upcoming season, it’s likely he will assume a larger role. Having spent most of his career on the Rangers’ third defensive pairing, Schneider is poised to move up following Erik Gustafsson’s departure and Jacob Trouba’s statistical decline.
It will be interesting to see Schneider pair up with K’Andre Miller as New York’s second defensive unit. Both players are larger forwards with unique physical attributes, and they could form a formidable presence on the ice if head coach Peter Laviolette decides to give Schneider a more prominent role.
