Huge Boost: Trade Proposal Sends Yankees $2 Million Power-Speed Threat in 4-Player Swap
The New York Yankees have entered the All-Star break in a postseason position but are trailing the Baltimore Orioles in the American League East standings. To strengthen their offense before the July 30 trade deadline, the Yankees could consider targeting Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the Miami Marlins.
During a July 15 live stream on Bleacher Report, Robbie Hyde proposed the following trade:
**Yankees receive:**
– Center fielder/second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr.
**Marlins receive:**
– Outfielder Everson Pereira
– Shortstop George Lombard Jr.
– Left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge
According to MLB.com, Pereira (ranked 5th), Lombard Jr. (6th), and Selvidge (10th) are all top-10 prospects in the Yankees’ system. Pereira could make an immediate impact in the big leagues, while Lombard Jr. (currently in Single-A) and Selvidge (in Double-A) represent longer-term investments for the Marlins.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is making $2.625 million in 2024 and is under team control through 2026, making him an attractive option for the Yankees to boost their roster both in the short and long term.
The Yankees Have Discussed Trading for Chisholm
The Marlins are one of MLB’s clear sellers ahead of the trade deadline, entering the All-Star break with a 33-63 record. They already traded Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres in early May.
On July 8, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reported a “growing belief” that Jazz Chisholm might be traded soon. The New York Yankees appear to be a potential destination, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Heyman stated, “The Yankees have discussed Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Marlins’ talented outfielder-turned-infielder. The extent of the interest is unknown, but Chisholm likely would play mostly infield, a Yankees need.”
Chisholm is batting .249/.321/.407 this season with 12 home runs, 12 doubles, 42 RBIs, 41 runs scored, and 18 steals in 393 plate appearances. He has consistently been a threat on the bases since his first full big-league season in 2021, narrowly missing 20-20 performances twice – once in 2021 (18 homers and 23 steals) and again in 2023 (19 homers and 22 steals).
While he has mostly played center field this season, Chisholm has recently started playing second base again. The Yankees could position him there in place of Gleyber Torres, who has underperformed in 2024.
How Chisholm Could Help New York in Its Juan Soto Pursuit
A versatile position player like Chisholm could fit on multiple contending teams. Acquiring him could also assist the Yankees in their pursuit of outfielder Juan Soto this winter.
Gleyber Torres is set to become a free agent at the end of this season. Bringing Chisholm into the fold would provide the Yankees with a multi-year option at second base without requiring a significant financial commitment. This would appeal to team owner Hal Steinbrenner, who has publicly stated that the Bombers’ $300-plus million payroll isn’t sustainable.
Despite this, the Yankees are “expected to be aggressive” in their efforts to re-sign Soto. The bidding for Soto could easily surpass the $500 million mark, depending on the market of interested teams. If New York is serious about retaining Soto at almost any cost, the club will need to cut back on other roster areas in terms of financial commitments. Acquiring Chisholm would certainly support these efforts.
